The ledger collects all journal entries by account; the trial balance proves the books are in arithmetic equilibrium before financial statements are prepared.

Learn: The Ledger and Trial Balance
PART VII โ ACCOUNTING ยท Educational Guide
The Core Idea
After recording dozens of journal entries, Jake needs to see the running balance of each account. That's the general ledger โ essentially a separate page or column for every account, showing every debit and credit posted to it. The trial balance then checks whether all those pages still add up correctly.
How It Works
The ledger organises journal entries by account (using T-accounts). Each T-account shows debits on the left, credits on the right, and nets to a balance. The trial balance lists every account balance in two columns (debit balances vs. credit balances) and totals both. If Dr total = Cr total, the books are arithmetically balanced โ a prerequisite for financial statements.
๐ก
Real-World Example: Jake's key ledger balances end of season: Cash $145,000 (Dr), Tractor $80,000 (Dr), USDA Loan $50,000 (Cr), Corn Sales $200,000 (Cr), Labor $18,000 (Dr), Other Expenses $36,000 (Dr). Trial balance check: all Dr balances summed = all Cr balances summed = $310,000 โ. Cash T-account: Dr $200,000 โ Cr $55,000 = $145,000 balance.
